The year began as it meant to go on. Napa Valley experienced a cold, wet winter and delayed budbreak. Cool, cloudy conditions at flowering set a naturally small crop, which was a blessing considering the ensuing colder conditions this year. Short-lived heat spikes occurred at the end of June and in mid-July, delivering a shock to the vines amidst an otherwise long, cool, cloudy period. Fortunately, the end of September turned out warm and sunny, kick-starting a rush to harvest in early to mid-October.
The long, drawn-out growing season resulted in many elegantly styled, medium-bodied wines that have held the test of time remarkably well. The best wines have preserved their fruit beautifully, delivering firm, ripe, tannic backbones, and well-knit freshness.
