It was a wet spring. It was a wet summer. It was a wet harvest. This was one of the wettest growing seasons in Bordeaux of the 20th Century. And in Bordeaux, where there’s too much rain, there’s rot. Much of the crop was lost this year to mildew and grey rot (the ugly side of Botrytis). Then there was the dilution. Dry white wines were acceptable to good, but neither exciting nor overly age-worthy. It was a small crop for the reds, which were/are, well, wishy-washy. Sauternes could not even catch a break as grey rot overran the Botrytis, and some so-so sweet wines were made from the first passes. In summary, there’s nothing to see here. Even the top wines of this vintage should have been consumed at least a decade ago.
